Thursday Thirteen Ed. # 5

I'm sure we've all heard of the health benefits of antioxidants. They are known to protect the body's cells from the damaging effects of free radicals (whatever that means! That's another Thursday Thirteen maybe?). Suffice it to say, the damaging stress these free radicals place on our cells have been linked to cancer, ageing, heart disease, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, etc. In 2004, Wu X, Beecher GR, Holden JM, et al. published "Lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidant capacities of common foods in the United States" in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry (52(12):4026-37). So this week, as per this article, I'd like to list:

The Top Thirteen Antioxidant Rich Foods in the Common North American Diet Which I Will Try to Eat More of:
  1. Small Red Bean (dried)
  2. Wild Blueberry
  3. Red Kidney Bean (dried)
  4. Pinto Bean
  5. Blueberry (cultivated)
  6. Cranberry
  7. Artichoke (cooked)
  8. Blackberry
  9. Dried Prune
  10. Raspberry
  11. Strawberry
  12. Red Delicious Apple
  13. Granny Smith Apple
Bonus: okay, they listed 20, so here are the rest in descending order: Pecan, Sweet Cherry, Black Plum, Russet Potato (cooked)!!, Black Bean (dried), Plum, and Gala Apple.

To your good health Thirteeners! Happy Thirteening :)

I will need to have more of those in my daily diet ( I think..) Right now , I am drinking this pomegranate (not in your list)blueberry concentrate drink. They say it has good antioxidant properties, and especially good to fight coughs & cold (which I am fighting a tough battle right now)=(
That doesn't stop me from enjoying Thursday Thirteening, though!
Happy T13!

Very good list.

As for the flatulence (fart) of beans...add 4-5 dticks of celery (chopped or not) while cooking. It nutralizes the methane producing effect of beans.

We do the apples and strawberries, occasionally blueberries in muffins. I wish my family liked beans. I grew up on pinto beans and rice and cornbread. :)

Ghee: Hey Ghee! I love tofu, I'm gonna look up its antioxidant properties.... I have heard of estrogen in soybeans, some scientist was claiming that eating soybeans was turning our children gay hehe...I heard it on MTV though, so I don't know about that, I'll have to read up on it :) Happy Double T :D

I'm thinking of trying to switch from coffee. I'm just not sure the caffiene content of green tea would suffice....I'll try it :)
