Thursday Thirteen Ed. #10

Thirteen more random oddities/interesting stuff from my week:
  1. We had a doozie of a snowstorm..... It was cold and the snow made visibility really poor, it later turned into ice pellets in the evening....ouch!
  2. The ice pellets coated everything in a layer of ice overnight.
  3. By the morning, it had warmed up and it was sunny, so that most of the snow started to melt.... it turned into a big wet slushy mess.
  4. As I got out of my car at the train station parking lot, pieces of ice came crashing down from the sky! I looked up and realized it came from one of the 40 ft lamp posts. Good thing I parked far from any lamp post.
  5. There was so much traffic coming into the city during rush hour because the major highway (the Gardiner Expressway) was closed due to falling ice from the CN Tower! I thought ice falling from 40 ft was bad, but what about ice falling from 1800 ft! Needless to say some car windows were smashed, and some guy got hit on the head. Check out the videos from CityTV and CBC News(.mov) /(.rm).
  6. Temperatures dropped to -30 again...
  7. As my bus approached the city, the view of Lake Ontario was awesome! I guess, overnight, the frigid temperatures froze most of the surface of the lake over. As the morning sun warmed up and melted this ice, the entire surface of Lake Ontario was covered in a layer of mist. It looked almost like a thin layer of clouds had descended and was hovering over the lake.... I couldn't get a good shot, and by the time I got a chance to go to the lakeshore, all I could get on film was this..... the picture doesn't do it justice.
  8. My dad's flight from NYC was cancelled because of the weather related delays and cancellations. He was able to get a flight into Toronto at 2AM!
  9. You gotta love this weather.... For the weekend, the temperature is supposed to rise to +6! Ya!, is it spring yet, is it spring yet?
  10. Okay, let's move away from weather related oddities.... okay just one more.... lots of trees were downed by the storm.... what a waste.....
  11. There has been a gas shortage in Ontario for a couple of weeks! Damage to a refinery by a fire last month, coupled with a railway strike has left many gas stations with no gas.... needless to say the ones who do have gas are milking us for every penny!
  12. As I walked by the Provincial Parliament buildings, I saw some colourful flags surrounding a tent... as I moved closer to investigate I could hear the sound of chanting and could smell burning insense.... It was a group of Tibetans including some monks protesting their country's occupation by Communist China...you can see one of the signs says "No human rights, No Olympics" Free Tibet, boycott the 2008 Olympics! I'm reminded once again of my loathing of the Chinese government!
  13. As I sat studying at the Hart House library, my stomach started growling... really loud, disturbing the stillness of the library..... It wouldn't stop and just got louder and louder.... a girl sitting behind me was on her laptop, I started imagining her writing in her blog about some Gross Growling Stomach Guy.... I decide to leave and eat something...

Hi Angelo and Nermal.

We don't have snowstorms that down trees, we have tropical storms (we're promised some tomorrow and Saturday). As we live on five acres, we have heaps of gum trees on the property and I'm always nervous that one of the giants in front of my place will topple and squish both Oscar and me.

So far it hasn't happened and it probably won't. During a hot and humid summer day like today, I'm grateful for the shade the trees provide, it's only during storms I get anxious

Cheers

I enjoyed your TT very much. I am glad the falling ice missed you and your car. I glanced at the post before as well and Nermal is totally ADORABLE! Give him a scratch under the chin from me.
Terrific Thursday Thirteen!
My TT is posted.
Have a wonderful day!
Happy TT'ing!

As always, we follow the news back in Canada on the internet, and the weather in Ontario has been crazy! Makes me very happy we were posted to Munich from Ottawa last summer. ;) It sound like you guys were really dumped on! And crazy that they had to close down the Gardiner because of ice falling off the CN Tower. I went to university in Guelph, so I'm very familiar with Toronto from weekend trips to the city.

I hope it warms up for you soon!

I live at sea level and without snow. The only time I see snow is when we book a ski holiday so I have a very happy perspective of it...Drive carefully...

The ducks are not pets-they belong to (and are protected by)the state--you can't throw rocks-shoot at--play laser tag--or eat the ducks...I have massive ponds that attract them--and I think I have a few of your geese now.
Ontario Canada-Ontario,California..what's a few inches of snow between friends...

Growling stomach reminds me of my pre-med days. I learned very fast to keep Garditos snacks in my locker and in my backpack.

Today, I can't look at that thing and still amazed that I ate that stuff almost every days. Yikes!

Did anyone die on that ice falling off the 1800ft needle?
